About the Position
Digital Promise is seeking an experienced Comptroller to lead the organization’s accounting function. With functional responsibility over all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and revenue recognition, the Comptroller plays a critical role in supporting Digital Promise’s Mission. They must thoroughly understand Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), including GAAP for nonprofits, uniform guidance for federal awards, and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) pronouncements. Sound judgment to evaluate financial processes and make recommendations is a must.

The candidate must be highly collaborative and comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and managing a team of accounting professionals. Digital Promise currently has an accounting staff of 6 in addition to the Comptroller, an Accounting Supervisor, two Senior Staff Accountant, a Payroll Administrator, a Federal Grants Specialist and a Staff Accountant.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and/or 2 CFR Part 200.
  • Consistent with the organizational priorities, develop, analyze, and make recommendations relating to accounting and financial systems to ensure effective and efficient financial operations.
  • Manages the monthly closing process, including preparation and approval of journal entries, verifying correct coding of revenues and expenses, and reconciling all balance sheet accounts to external sources.
  • Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions to ensure fidelity of data and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end reporting.
  • Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner, clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes, and keep VP & COO abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Oversee all program and grants accounting and reporting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period.
  • Oversee the payroll function and related systems.
  • Oversee the full coordination of all the audits and the gathering of required audit schedules and reconciliations, IRS Form 990 preparations, and filing activity.
  • Manage required state and corporate business filings.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team of talented accounting professionals.
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication and keep the VP & COO informed of all accounting issues.
  • Assist the VP & COO in the annual budgeting process and in developing forward looking projections.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in accounting (or equivalent degree) active CPA or CMA license required.
  • 15 years of experience including at least 5 years of general ledger and financial statement responsibility.
  • Experience leading and structuring an accounting team.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with GAAP including nonprofit accounting, new revenue recognition standards, and uniform guidance.
  • History of successfully implementing/integrating systems, policies and protocols.
  • Experience working with general ledger accounting systems required, experience with Sage Intacct a plus.
  • Non-profit sector experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present accounting and financial requirements to diverse audiences including program
  • A passion for learning, a team mentality, creativity, and a positive “can-do” “yes-and” spirit.

Working Conditions:
Digital Promise Global is a hybrid organization. Employees are expected to travel at least 4 times a year for in-person meetings and the annual staff retreat. Additional travel may be required based on role and responsibilities.

Compensation

We consider candidate experience and location when determining where a candidate may fall within that range. Digital Promise offers a competitive total rewards package including coverage of 85% of health insurance premiums for employee coverage and 75% of health insurance premiums for dependent and family coverage, 15 vacation days, 12 sick days, 3% 401k employer contribution, 3% employer 401k match, and a flexible work environment.

The full-time salary range for the Comptroller position based on geographical regions is listed below, with an exact salary depending on relevant experience.

California: $204,846 - $230,452
DC Metro Area & NYC: $186,224 - $209,502
National: $167,602 - $188,552
