About the Initiative
Digital Promise, with support from the Verizon Foundation and Verizon Wireless, is partnering with 150 U.S. middle schools across the country to create innovative learning environments and fully document the process so others can learn from their experiences. With a goal to close the digital learning gap at a diverse array of low-income middle schools, this initiative will provide students with one-to-one access to mobile learning technology in the classroom and at home, educators with personalized professional development, and all participants with a national community of practice. There is a focus on engaging students and teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) during the course of the grant.

About the Position
The Associate Director of Professional Learning will be primarily responsible for building capacity in and supporting school-based instructional coaches in a subset of the 150 schools and helping teachers fully leverage the technology in and out of school. This is an exciting opportunity to play an integral role in a national initiative that leverages technology in support of teaching and learning.


Professional Development Planning and Delivery

  • Serve as primary point of contact for the initiative for a portfolio of 10+ schools

  • Work collaboratively with school leadership teams to create a vision and strategic plan for professional development in a school, aligned to both Verizon Innovative Learning outcomes and school goals, leveraging technology and always available access.

  • Work with school and district leadership to resolve challenges related to the implementation of the initiative.

  • Collaborate with Digital Promise staff, school leadership and initiative partners to develop and execute strategic professional learning plans.

  • Conduct approximately 3 on-site visits each year for each school in the Associate Director’s portfolio, and support on-site training for other Associate Directors’ portfolios.

  • Conduct multiple virtual school visits and virtual coaching to provide support and focus, ensuring that school-based coaches are leading and all teachers are engaged and challenged.

  • Support all teachers in the integration of effective uses of digital technology through a consistent pattern of in-person and virtual professional learning support, strategic outreach and informal support.

  • Lead the full-time instructional coaches, helping them think through coaching models and ways to build a strong learning culture in their schools.

  • Help schools increase student exposure and engagement in STEM activities and courses.

Building Coaching Capacity

  • Build coaching capacity of full-time school-based instructional coaches, strategically exposing them to effective coaching models

  • Connect coaches with best practices from across the network

  • Select and pair coaches with strong peers within the program (“Buddies”) with whom they can and do connect to collaborate on projects, share best practices and advance initiative goals

  • Train coaches to identify, set up and support model classrooms in their buildings


  • Identify and track key performance indicators and metrics that measure progress towards the achievement of initiative goals. (increased student engagement, increased student and teacher proficiency with technology, increased academic achievement, increased interest in STEM subjects and careers)

  • Collect school-based data and generate reports on the progress of each school in the portfolio.

  • Provide vital insights and reporting across the program for Verizon, Digital Promise, school leadership and others.

  • Encourage reflection and sharing on social media channels, and work closely with the project storytellers to identify victories, lessons learned, and needs & concerns.

Initiative Implementation

  • Work with peers to plan and host virtual and in-person convenings for school leaders and teachers

  • Work with peers on process development and improvement

  • Connect with colleagues in other Digital Promise initiatives to share best practices

  • Think, work and plan sequentially toward initiative outcomes, constantly managing multiple deadlines and needs of different stakeholders

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Approximately 50% domestic travel with periods of higher travel in the spring and fall.


  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Education, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or related field. Teaching experience at the middle school level or above

  • Experience coaching teachers in a school setting.

  • Successful presentation/facilitation experience with adult learners

  • Strong content knowledge in across subject areas preferred

  • Experience working with district leadership on professional development plans for schools or initiative implementation at the school level

  • School or district leadership experience such as mentoring or coaching teachers and/or building or central office positions

  • Basic understanding of school district technology environments and product deployment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google environments

  • Outstanding communication and influencing skills with all school district stakeholders

  • Ability to independently take initiative and work efficiently, exercising reasonable judgment, in a fast-paced, multi-task environment.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and demonstrate problem-solving skills, while maintaining diplomacy and professionalism.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet quantitative and qualitative objectives. Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.

  • Exceptional project management skills including the ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously using prioritization and delegation.

  • Ability to work as a strong individual contributor on the national team.

  • Strong history of innovative teaching practices and building student aspirations.

  • Ability to clearly communicate and inspire others to think about how digital technology supports learning.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, and in multiple formats (virtual, multimedia, face-to-face, etc.).

  • Eager to take a leadership role and empower others to do the same.

  • Strong writing and analytical skills

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage competing tasks, deadlines, requirements, and decisions.

  • A passion for education, a team mentality, creativity, and a positive “can-do” “yes-and” spirit.

  • New York City, NY Metro area preferred. 

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience.
