Field Study Research Assistant

About the Position
We are seeking part-time research assistance, on a consultancy basis, to help with data collection for a field study on the efficacy of an app developed for parents and caregivers to use while co-viewing Splash and Bubbles with their young children. The project is a collaboration among the Jim Henson Company, Curious Media, and Digital Promise Global, and is funded by the National Science Foundation. 

From September 2019 through December 2019, Digital Promise Global will conduct a field study to explore whether the app encourages and supports supports adults’ joint media engagement with children and promotes science talk and science learning. The study will include 30 families with children enrolled in TK or K in Fall 2019. Research assistants will support all aspects of the data collection, including coordinating and conducting visits (involving observations and interviews) with families and administering child learning tasks. Visits will take place at community-based locations (e.g., libraries, churches, schools) that are convenient for participating families, likely in San Francisco, the East or North Bay. 

Responsibilities

  • Attend a training session in August/early September to prepare for job responsibilities as well as periodic debrief meetings with the field study lead

  • Attend regular meetings (via conference call) with the field study lead and other research assistants

  • Support the field study lead in coordinating, scheduling, and confirming visits with families via text and/or phone

  • Make travel arrangements for visits to community-based locations (there will be compensation for mileage/public transportation fare and time traveling between centers)

  • Conduct observations and interviews with families 

  • Administer child learning tasks

  • Document all data accurately and thoroughly using Digital Promise Global data collection forms

  • Submit all data in a timely fashion using Digital Promise Global data collection processes

  • Coordinate and communicate with Digital Promise Global team members as required

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a graduate student in education, psychology, or media studies/ communications (with a focus on children’s media). The ideal candidate will also enjoy and have demonstrated experience working with young children and their families (e.g., as a teacher or assistant teacher in an early childhood center/ early elementary grades, participating in early childhood research studies, conducting assessments with young children.). Working knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

Applicants must:

  • Have, at a minimum, undergraduate coursework in education, psychology, or other field related to children  

  • Be willing to complete all security measures required by the study

  • Have availability during late-afternoons, evenings, and weekends to accommodate families’ availability for data collection

  • Be able to transport themselves to centers, family homes, or alternative community locations in the Bay Area

  • Have strong interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills.

  • Possess a passion for education, a team mentality, creativity, and a positive “can-do” “yes-and” spirit

The position will require approximately 10-12 hours per week during the data collection period from September 2019 through December 2019. Applicants must work with the Digital Promise Global team to accommodate the availability of families for data collection. 

 

Compensation
Digital Promise Global will offer a competitive hourly wage as well as compensation for mileage/public transportation fare and time traveling to and from data collection sites.
